Carnelian Gem Stones from New Mexico
This pile of Carnelian was gathered over a period of three hours near Cooks Peak northeast of Deming, New Mexico. This is untumbled and unpolished raw Carnelian that Sharon and I picked up from the desert floor. We try to go out about three times a week to hunt for Carnelian. We never know what color of Carnelian that we will find because it comes in coral, light and dark orange and light and dark red colors. Carnelian is a gem stone used in jewelry since the Biblical days. It is said to have properties of good luck or good fortune to those who wear it. This is the only place in New Mexico that Carnelian is found. Carnelian is also found near Moab, Utah and near Sweet Home, Oregon.
